Its my favourite event of the year. My absolute favourite. Not even the Oscars can hold a candle to the annual Metropolitan Costume Institute Gala, the Met Ball. Everyone who is anyone is fashion and the media seems to roll up and the general consensus seems to be that all stops should be pulled out.
Here are my three favourite looks from this year's event.
Jessica Alba looking stunning in a bronze/gold Michael Kors. As a rule I'm not a huge fan of hers, but she seldom seems to get it wrong on the red carpet. She looks effortless but amazing.
The colour is just divine on her and the dress is eye catching and memorable without being over the top. The hair keeps the look young and fresh. And also, unusual in the Met Ball world, the dress doesn't look like she had to be pulled out of the limo flat and placed into an upright position (unlike say Beyonce's 2010 look). Well played, Jessica.
Up next, is Glee's Dianna Agron. Another young star who seems to have a knack for the red carpet.
I love, love, love this dress. She's wearing Caroline Herrara and the colour alone is so gorgeous it makes me want to cry. Again, its effortlessly elegant, is simply but effectively styled and flatters its wearer. If I were going to the Met Ball (oh that I were!) this is what I'd want to be wearing.
Last but by no means least was Nina Dobrev is Donna Karen Atelier.
Everything that a Met Ball gown should be, Dobrev's one shouldered black and gold dress was a head turner, matched with a simple yet stunning updo. Me likey. Oh yes.
But for every outfit that knocked it out of the park there was one that got it oh so wrong. My three least favourite looks of the night.
Beyonce. Beyonce, you are a beautiful, striking woman. So why do you insist on wearing dresses that clearly hate you?
I love Beyonce but I absolutely abhor this dress. Its Givenchy Haute Couture and with the exception of the person in it, there is nothing about it I like. Its too fussy, the sheer isn't working and I just hate it. Its only plus point in my mind is that she could actually walk up the stair of her own volition this year.
Scarlett Johansson. I don't hate this look, so much as I'm disappointed in it. Its just a bit bland.
Its Dolce and Gabanna and I'll be honest, on paper its a great dress. Dramatic lines, gorgeous embellishment, being worn by one of the world's most beautiful women. And yet... It could be the colour, it could be the styling (her hair needed to be far more groomed looking I think) but something about it is just not working for me.
And lastly Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga.
I probably wouldn't be a fan of the dress in any context, but at a less formal event she might rock the look. However, at a 'bring it' event like Met Ball its right out of place. The pattern and colour clash don't really work for me and the shoes make her look like she is wearing ankle socks. In a club, at a more key event I could most likely applaud her fashion boldness, but I can't help but think she might have been better wearing this. Again, its not a dress I love but it would be more event appropriate.
And finally, one final dress from the Met Ball that gets an honourable mention for encapsulating everything that is wacky and glamourous and fabulous about the Met Ball.
Model Karoline Korkova in Rachel Zoe, replete with turban. It speaks for itself!
Can't wait for next year.
